In the United States, it is available at foreign book importers such as the Continental Book Company <http://www.continentalbook.com/catalog/french/frhistory.html> as part of the FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) Textbooks and Classroom Materials for Beginning Learners, and listed under the "Collection pour Connaître la France" - HA584 - HISTOIRE CM. $29.50 J.-L. Nembrini, P. Polivka, and J. Bordes. Hardcover, 160pp. ISBN:2010111109 HA5842 - Workbook. $10.95 HA5843 - Teacher's Guide. $20.50 [HA = Librairie Hachette].
Clearly organized, color-coded, written at the intermediate reading level and including an excellent historical atlas, this CM (=Cours Moyen) French textbook is used in the last two years of primary school in France. This reading level is ideally suitable for use in authentic content-based learning with 4th year French High School students, as well as with 200 level University students. The teacher's guide is a gem, giving a wealth of historical background information as well as excellent pedagogical suggestions.
Course levels in the French École primaire consist of Cours préparatoire (CP), Cours Élementaire (CM1 & CM2) and Cours Moyen (CM1 & CM2).

Thanks again for your lovely note, and don't hesitate to contact me if I may be of further help.

To: Janice paulsen <jpaulsen1@verizon.net>Dear Janice,
I hope you remember me. You helped me survive my first year of teaching, not only because of your guidance in teaching Le Petit Prince, but also because you were so encouraging.
Well, I'm about to start my second year of teaching at a new high school, my son's. This year will be levels 2, 3 (Regents level), and a 4/5. Discovering French Blanc for the 2s and Rouge for the 3s; Tresors du temps for the 4/5 (are you familiar with it?).It is because of the latter that I am writing you because I have just rediscovered your wonderful site and have found some great stuff regarding early French history/lit, etc. I'm wondering, though, what Hachette book you used (CM is all that is mentioned). I'm hoping that the material isn't too dry for these high students. If you have any ideas about some activities or suggested supplementary material ideas let me know.
[...] I'm rather excited about the coming year, and my self-confidence and determination are due in large part to you.

I certainly do remember you :-)! and am delighted you have this wonderful new teaching opportunity. Here's the information you requested:The Hachette book referred to in my "Ressources, Fiches, et Activités pour accompagner l'étude d'Histoire CM " site <http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/histoire.html> is Histoire CM. Note in my comments below that using an authentic French student "manuel d'histoire" is highly motivating for students. It reinforces their awareness of the value of their language skills while simultaneously enabling them to understand the history and mentality of another culture. This text can be purchased in the United States from foreign book importers such as the Continental Book Company <http://www.continentalbook.com/catalog/french/frhistory.html>. It is part of the "Collection pour Connaître la France" - HA584 - HISTOIRE CM. $29.50 J.-L. Nembrini, P. Polivka, and J. Bordes. Hardcover, 160pp. ISBN:2010111109 HA5842 - Workbook. $10.95 HA5843 - Teacher's Guide. $20.50 [HA = Librairie Hachette].

At the end of this message, I've included information on supplementary readers (also available at importers such as Continental) though I bought ours during exchange trips to France.
[Course levels in the French École primaire consist of Cours préparatoire (CP), Cours Élementaire (CM1 & CM2) and Cours Moyen (CM1 & CM2).]
When I was teaching at the high school level, my students used this authentic text the second semester of their 4th year of French (the same academic year in which they had studied Le Petit Prince for an 8 week portion of the first semester). At the University of Richmond, my French 221 (200 level one semester "intensive" course) students used this civilization text as the "reader" to accompany their basic second year (intermediate level) French language text.
You'll find the detailed course of study for that university second year French 221 course at <http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/fr221syl.html>. As indicated in the Course Outline which begins at <http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/221outl.html>, the Histoire text was introduced that January 24th. Although the UR course outline links have not been updated (you'll note in some cases the old <richmond> domain name rather than the newer <richmond>), the <richmond> domain still works for the <richmond.edu> sites. You'll find activities of interest and also be able to observe the manner in which I integrated the study of French language structures with the HISTOIRE materials, a large portion of which I have since updated. You've already found the main "Histoire" welcome page from which you can link to the "Fiches, Activités et Ressources pour accompagner l'étude d'Histoire CM - <http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/histoire.html>.
As for your hopes that the Histoire CM material will not be "too dry" for your students, I can assure you that students find this approach highly motivating. I began using this text in the late 80's, because students and I had found the previously used text, Tresors du Temps, entirely too dry, too "from the American rather than the French point of view", and not sufficiently authentic for our tastes. The students at both the high school and university level LOVED using this French educational system "manuel d'histoire" to see how the French taught THEIR history to THEIR next generation.
As for the methodology, after presenting the initial lessons (from the Préhistoire section) as indicated in the "Activités pour Accompagner Histoire CM: Au commencement - La Préhistoire" and helping students learn how to tackle the materials, I then turned the lesson presentation over to them ---helping them choose the major lessons for the topics they prefered to present, being available for any outside of class help they might need, and giving them print-outs from the Livre du maître. They particularly loved having access to the teacher's guide lesson notes and plans. Once you see the text you'll see how well the lessons lend themselves to student presentation projects. You've probably already noted the planning and evaluation "fiches" for these presentations at my Histoire site. Since there is no French-English vocabulary at the back of these authentic French textbooks, I had asked that the students purchase the Larousse de Poche dictionaries. Of course, they could also use a bilingual dictionary ---but only outside of class; in class, students were required to communicate the definitions in French using the various "Procédés pour faciliter la COMMUNICATION" indicated in the Fiche d'Évaluation (Fiche #5).
If you can convince your school system to purchase these AUTHENTIC materials (or something similar, for you may find something you like even better!), you'll see that it makes all the difference in the world in student motivation. The first year I used the materials, (which some of my students had actually chosen while in France with me on our annual French exchange that previous spring) we knew we were all going to tackle the study together and that sometimes they might even be one step ahead of me in some areas because of their recent history studies background. At the end of that study, and every year thereafter, however, students always told me they learned more history with that study in French than they had learned during their whole 11-12 years in school. (Of course I knew that was partly because all they had learned previously came through with this coverage of the history of man from prehistoric times to the present ---all in one semester).
For the final review, before the final exam, the students worked with partners to create board games in French for the historical period, personnalities, etc. of their choice. They created superb games which they loved playing *in French* the week before finals and they were always thrilled with their high scores on the final!
I'm here should you've have any further questions, etc.
Bon courage!

I am scheduled to teach French Civilization (origins to the present) next fall
semester (2001). This is an upper-division (5th/6th semester) college course.
Does anyone have any suggestions for good texts to use for such a course?Merci bien,

What an exciting opportunity you have awaiting you!My personal suggestion is that you not "kill" the third year student's interest in French civilization with French history texts produced by American text publishers when so many superb authentic resources are available.
Help your students develop the skills to understand what the French think about themselves rather than have them study in French what the text writer thinks the American student of French history needs to know.
The whole reason for developing the intermediate-mid to high level proficiency is to enable the student to get inside the mentality of the target culture through the use of authentic resources. Using materials prepared by French historians to enlighten the next generation on the rich French cultural heritage is much more motivating to students.
For example, here's a paragraph highlighting a splendid new Web French civilization resource on the Renaissance from an article I'm preparing for the Wake Forest IMEJ Journal:
"An email, Fri, 9 Feb 2001, from the Webmasters, announced the creation of this new French cultural resource site sponsored by the charitable foundation which supports the annual summer "Sound and Light Show" at the Château d'Amboise: HISTOIRE DE FRANCE SPECTACLE Son et Lumière "RENAISSANCE à AMBOISE" - [amboise.gif]: http://www.renaissance-amboise.com/. In addition to the digitized images from the spectacle itself, there is the goldmine companion collection of dossiers on L'histoire de la Renaissance en France et en Europe - [amboise-histoire] : http://www.renaissance-amboise.com/dossier_renaissance/accueil_renaissance_general.htm , all accessible from the Renaissance dossier drop-down menu and site search engine. This is certainly one of the best authentic French Net resource sites now available on the Renaissance in France and in Europe. The chronologie synthesis alone is a masterpiece, presented in four parts from 1430 - 1603 in the following five-column table format :
as indicated in this image [amboise-chrono.gif] from the "Les Événements importants de 1501 - 1550" . With authentic resources such as these prepared by the curators of the Amboise Renaissance foundation itself, it is easy to envision a collaborative group of intermediate-advanced level students enthousiastically using their authentic text, this Web site perhaps as a resource guide and then utilizing electronic and campus library resources to research, prepare and present all aspects of this historical period to their classmates.

[Note that this article has since been published in the April 2001 IMEJ Journal as "New Era Trends And Technologies in Foreign Language Learning: An Annotated Bibliography" <http://imej.wfu.edu/articles/2001/1/05/index.asp>.
You also might be interested in checking out the "Ressources W3, Fiches et Activités pour accompagner HISTOIRE CM" web site: http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/histoire.html , which I developed for a French 221 immersion French course at the University of Richmond the spring semester of 1996 (before I took over the direction of the UR Modern Languages and Literatures Department's Multimedia Language Lab), and which I update periodically along with all the other pages of my Quartier français: http://ensmp.net/~jpaulsen/gvfrench.html .
Bonne réussite dans votre cours :-),
